Role of Internet in Daily Life

Why are human beings, the most advanced species on the planet, so deeply dependent of internet?

To answer such question we must first look at how internet came to be and what is it's place in modern society.

The internet was created through a long collaborations by the US Department of Defense's APARNET in 1969, although initially a military asset used to transfer scientific information wirelessly it soon become a household term, now everything from business to education is o the internet.

Commerce

Internet become one of the most important sources of commerce in the late 80s early 90s with the rise of the Silicon Valley corporations, giving rise to a whole new term known as E-Commerce, it was so revolutionary because, for the first time in human history, it gave access to the consumer to order virtually anything from the comfort of your home, the businesses got access to vide scale consumer data, better inventory management, auditing, etc. which grew the sizes of businesses; in this regard internet become self propagating, the companies that used it grew and the companies that did not fell out of business. Ultimately, internet achieved a defining role in modern day economics.

Information

Another crucial aspect to the ever increasing role to the internet is it's relation with information, as it was the major factor in the universalization of knowledge, with internet all the information in the world was at your hand just a click away available to the most richest to even the poor strata of society. With this equalization of knowledge came modern forms of information distribution, being the Social Media, which made pervious forms of media obsolete and silently took over how people take information.

Control

Although internet has a lot of positive roles in daily life, a negative aspect of it is how it has made controlling the masses much simpler. In relation to social media, it is extremely easy to manipulate, strategic misinformation can be used to control the public narrative from what they perceive as original perspectives which are indeed manufactured. This often comes up in politics where misinformation is used to justify was, cover up crimes and distract the public from pressing issues.

Another problem the domination of internet over global information and economics is that it is western centric in nature, as it was originated in USA, it has held monopoly over internet both in terms of hardware and influence. Internet has propagated USA's soft power at an unprecedented scale, along with that since most of the global digital hardware is made in USA it uses this economic advantage to coerce countries that do not have such infrastructure to adhere to American terms, lest they should fall behind at a global scale.

Globalization

Arguably the prominent role of internet has been on globalization, internet has basically initiated the modern day globalization, without the internet it would have been extremely difficult to connect everyone in a world at such a scale that we enjoy today which is accurately depicted in this quote, "If the world is a village, internet is the river the village is on the bank of".

In conclusion, to answer the question first asked at the start of the blog, human beings are so deeply dependent on the internet because it is the epitome of  what makes our species the most advanced one on our planet.
